Support during COVID-19
Cancer Council Queensland values the safety of our staff, volunteers, and especially those living with cancer. We are focused on doing what we can to prevent the spread of COVID-19 in Queensland.
We will continue to provide accommodation to those travelling for treatment with minor changes. We request that all lodge guests and lodge transport clients follow social distancing practices, such as limiting numbers of people in common areas.
Our lodge transport will continue to run with social distancing measures in place, such as limiting passenger numbers where possible.
We have increased cleaning measures throughout the lodges and in all our vehicles and have provided hand sanitisers to use in our common areas and vehicles.
Any lodge visitors will be required to sign a Visitor Declaration Form to confirm they are feeling well and have not been diagnosed or had any contact with COVID-19
At this time, we would like to advise that all bookings are made without guarantee of service. If we cannot provide the service, we will advise our residents at the earliest possible time, so that you can make alternative arrangements.
Border Restrictions statement
Cancer Council Queensland is focused on doing what we can to prevent the spread of COVID-19 in Queensland. Our accommodation lodges and transport to treatment services are critical for many Queenslanders undergoing treatment, and so continue to operate with minor changes.
The Queensland Government has also introduced stricter border security measures for anyone entering the state as directed by the Chief Health Officer. Further information about Border Restrictions Direction can be found here. For the safety of our staff and volunteers, and especially those living with cancer who enter our premises or use our services, we will now be unable to accommodate anyone travelling from outside of the border zone areas. If you are unsure, please call Cancer Council 13 11 20. We trust you will cooperate with us in implementing these new measures and appreciate your understanding.
Essential medical care
You can enter Queensland from a hotspot for essential medical care without an exemption when the medical care cannot be provided in the hotspot.
Essential medical care is any:
- Appointment at the Queensland Children’s Hospital, confirmed in writing by the hospital.
- Appointment at a Queensland Hospital and Health Service associated outreach location, confirmed in writing by the service.
- Appointment at a licensed Queensland private health facility or ancillary clinic or service, confirmed in writing by the service or health practitioner.
- Appointment at an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Community Controlled Health Service, confirmed in writing by the service.
- Appointment with a prescribed health practitioner at another premises, confirmed in writing by the provider.
You will be required to comply with quarantine requirements. If you are admitted to a hospital or other facility, you will need to quarantine at the facility. Otherwise, you will need to quarantine at a hotel at you own expense.

Our accommodation support lodges are independent living facilities that provide a home away from home for those who need to travel to access cancer treatment. Available in Brisbane, Townsville, Cairns, Toowoomba and Rockhampton, our lodges offer comfortable self-contained units and studio-style apartments close to major hospitals and treatment facilities.
The full accommodation cost is covered if you are eligible for Queensland Government’s Patient Travel Subsidy Scheme (PTSS).

How much does it cost to stay at a Cancer Council lodge?
Accommodation fees are calculated on a per person per night basis, within the daily allowance of the Queensland Government’s Patient Travel Subsidy Scheme (PTSS), to limit out of pocket expenses for patients.
Under the PTSS, patients and carers (escorts) are required to pay for the first four nights of accommodation per financial year, unless eligible for a reduced contribution, as per the PTSS. Then all following nights of accommodation in that financial year can be subsidised under the scheme.
The Queensland Government’s Patient Travel Subsidy Scheme (PTSS) is a Queensland Health subsidy to approved patients and carers (escorts) to assist in the cost of travel to the nearest specialist medical service that is more than 50km from the patients nearest hospital. To see if you are eligible for the subsidy please contact your local hospital, your treatment team or the Queensland Government’s Patient Travel Subsidy Scheme website.
Special consideration is given to patients/families experiencing financial difficulties or those who do not qualify for the PTSS allowance.
How do I book my stay?

What if the lodge is unavailable?
If the lodges are fully booked you will need to contact your treatment team or your local hospital who can suggest accommodation options near your treatment facility.
How will I travel around?
Courtesy transport services are available on-site at Brisbane, Cairns, Townsville, Rockhampton and Toowoomba lodges. All our lodges across the state are able to support residents in accessing and arranging local transport services during their stay.

What facilities do the lodges have?
Each of our lodges offers the following amenities:
- Air-conditioned, self-contained units and studio-style apartments pleasantly decorated and designed for comfort and relaxation;
- A telephone and television in each unit, plus internet access upon request;
- All linen requirements and complete laundry facilities including washing machines and dryers;
- Food preparation areas and cooking facilities;
- Parking on premises for guests and caregivers; and
- A recreational area, complete with barbecue facilities, books, DVDs, magazines and children’s toys.
What support is offered during my stay?
When staying in our Cancer Council Lodges you will have access to Cancer Council Queensland employees and trained volunteers who can assist with practical, social and emotional support. They will ensure that your stay is as pleasant and comfortable as possible.
You will also have access to information sessions throughout your stay. Topics include managing diagnosis and treatment, and understanding the needs of a person receiving treatment.
The lodges also host regular social events, and volunteer-run shopping trips on weekdays.
To protect the health of all residents, employees and visitors, all buildings and grounds of Cancer Council Queensland lodges are 100 per cent smoke-free. Assistance in quitting smoking is available to residents during their stay and can be accessed by speaking with your lodge team.
